Chipping In

The University of Colorado received an endowment from Dr. Patricia Crown to create a new institute dedicated to the health and wellbeing of young people. The Renée Crown Wellness Institute, named in honor of Patricia’s mother, was the result of that endowment. Crown (as the institute is colloquially known) takes the approach of research-practice partnerships focusing on families, teachers and young people in communities. In other words, the academics at Crown work together with real people in the field to make real change happen.

With Heart

The Crown Institute had an exceptional staff of researchers, a solid underpinning of values, a full slate of programs…even a well developed brand voice. What they didn’t have was any kind of visual identity system. When DAD started working on the project, Crown provided two visual references as direction: a tree and a heart. The former was a metaphor used internally to describe the impact of their work. The latter was a visualization of one of Crown’s core values: always with heart.

Doing the Work

DAD created a simple but flexible identity system based on a monoline tree icon and a color palette that complimented the CU Boulder parent identity. Building on that system, DAD went on to create mountains of collateral, site content, social posts, teaching materials, swag and more. During that time, Crown was building an institute HQ on the university campus. DAD designed and oversaw fabrication of interior and environmental design as well as a full-sized wall mural in one of the building’s main spaces. DAD continues to work with Crown, as the institute’s work continues to have a positive impact in their community.
